In the 1990s, French curator Nicolas Bourriaud established Relational Aesthetics. The Tate Gallery defines Bourriaud’s vision: “He saw artists as facilitators rather than makers and regarded art as information exchanged between the artist and the viewers. The artist, in this sense, gives audiences access to power and the means to change the world.” Facilitation—That is, in essence, a goal of descendant art and altars—-every day, and in an annual day of deep contemplative celebration. We’re waiting… “Waiting for Godot” ends with the characters, Vladimir and Estragon, still waiting for Godot to arrive. The last lines of the play have Vladimir saying “Well, shall we go?”, to which Estragon responds “Yes, let’s go.” But they do not move and the play ends. INTENTIONS >> INTO >> ACTIONS Descendants. Who are they? Future generations? Future nature, earth? Well, that’s vague. A hazy view of the future is bringing us suboptimal care for it. Get to know your future generations by thinking about them. If we know something and love it, we will take care of it. Gerald Clarke is a Desert X 2023 artist and also one of our Day for Descendants Art & Altar group show artists in April. A Cahuilla Indian, Gerald works with topics of his heritage and life experience. His art is often quite physical, presenting crafts he has acquired growing up around a reservation as well as studying welding, hydraulics, and electrical maintenance. He’s a father, rancher, university art teacher, tribal leader, accomplished bird singer, and much more. Gerald’s work is in many museum and private collections. My 2021 altar installed in the beautiful Coachella library plaza at @raices_cultura ‘s Dia De Los Muertos celebration. Honored to participate in such a remarkable gathering. I gave away 3x5 altar cards (bookmarks) to visitors, visible in several of these images. I learn a lot about a lot each year I do this. Day of the Dead altar building plus my work in sustainability led me to the idea of Day for Descendants altar celebrations connecting our lineages + legacies.
