Artist Statement

I’m interested in the way things are connected or not. In the way we see and live in our worlds. Connection seems to me to be a beautiful part of life.

I've learned in my life experiences that problems can occur when connected systems are disconnected (such as natural systems), or poorly integrated (such as societal, governmental, business, and cultural systems).

These problems represent various forms of loss. To a good extent, I've 'been in the room' and observed (and worked to overcome) the states of mind that lead to decisions that lead to loss in our neighborhoods, cities, and beyond. My current ''states of mind' theme and 'denial' series are about those decisions.

Not Always So
Not Always So

Because I have studied and love figurative art, I root my designs--even abstractions--in the human figure--specifically expressing states of mind that I have personally observed leading to loss. So, as I am a bit of a mongrel with two disparate realms in my life--urban economics and art, you can look at these abstractions as my reporting, editorializing, and expressing concern. Or, just working it out. It is cathartic for me, hopefully prompting awareness and curiosity in others--and hopefully contributing to positive change.

Twelve mixed media pieces are in the  works for the Denial series, with a few more to come. Additional series about various other 'states of mind' are in the works. Please stay tuned!  And, if you want, I'd love your feedback. DM my Instagram or Twitter, or contact me on this website.

I’ve come to know..
• You can’t separate the dancer from the dance
• You can be too right (or IOW you can be so right you're wrong)
• Knowing my choices is good; often not choosing is a choice
• Emotional freedom is essential, and what allows real happiness
• Things change --as Buddhism has taught me 'not always so'

Carrying on...thank you for visiting.

About Pario Art

I'm Mark Smith and also work under Pario Art. I'm an urban economist and founder of Pario Research, and an artist. See www.Pario.com and www.PlannedDensification.com. No surprise my current art is a synthesis of my work, and my values. Pario has many meanings relating to both my work and art: to gather, to create, to produce.

Art is for sale. A store is being built.

I make and sell:

  • My personal art, see statement above, and this blog post for influences that affect my every day.
  • Custom house/building names and logo packages, including digital artwork for stationary; embroidery on pillow cases, throw pillows, and other linens; cups and glasses; and other personalizations. Home names and 'crests' in the United Kingdom and Japan seem to add a welcome personality element to buildings and neighborhoods. I hope you want one.
  • Altars/shrines. They captivate me.
